Exploring Textures

What you need

  • Different materials for your baby to feel, for example, smooth, furry, bumpy, rough or sticky materials and/or surfaces.

What to do

Introduce your child to different textures around them.

What they learn

Babies learn through all their senses, including touch. Providing different materials for your baby or child stimulates their sense of touch.

Encouragement questions

  • If your child is old enough to speak ask them to describe the different textures they can feel.
  • If they cannot talk yet give encouraging vocalisations or body language to encourage them to explore the different textures you are providing.
